Everybody Knows

The room had been tidied with care, but not with attention. Surfaces were clear, the desk aligned, the chair pushed neatly back into place — all the signs of someone trying to make a space forgettable. Only the bin had been overlooked, its contents compressed rather than emptied, paper edges visible beneath the rim.
Inside were fragments of a note, torn deliberately into narrow strips. It took time to piece them together, aligning ink strokes and half-sentences, but the message was intact enough to be understood. You smooth the paper flat, take a breath, and read what remains.
